Standard 6: External Development Leadership
A principal will design structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership. Acknowledging that schools no longer reflect but, in fact, build community, the leader proactively creates with staff, opportunities for parents/guardians, community and business representatives to participate as “stockholders” in the school such that continued investment of resources and good will are not left to chance.

I learned how to leverage parent feedback to build trust and foster positive relationships. Family and Community Walkthroughs help to eliminate the barrier between the school and parents/community by creating an open door environment. This also added a level of transparency that helped parents build faith in the school.

Click on an image to increase size! During my residency the PTO sponsored "West Idol" to showcase our students and raise money for the PTO. Additionally, we held breakfasts for parents throughout the year. These type of events highlight the importance of leveraging community and parent relationships to positively support the school.

These are some ECPS Board of Education Agendas/Minutes. Throughout my residency I attended board of education meetings to build relationships with all stakeholders and support the district's efforts. Additionally, BOE meetings gave me first person insight into the many decisions that are made during the school year.

One of roles during my residency was the NC STAR process manager. I was responsible for ensuring compliance with state and district standards. This gave me hands on experience with the school improvement process and the documentation system required by the state. I was responsible for entering/recording SIT meetings, artifacts and SIP progress.
