Standard 1: Strategic Leadership
Principals will create conditions that result in strategically re-imaging the school’s vision, mission, and goals in the 21st century. Understanding that schools ideally prepare students for an unseen but not altogether unpredictable future, the leader creates a climate of inquiry that challenges the school community to continually re-purpose itself by building on its core values and beliefs about its preferred future and then developing a pathway to reach it.
Element 1a. School Vision, Mission and Strategic Goals:
The school’s identity, in part, is derived from the vision, mission, values, beliefs and goals of the school, the processes used to establish these attributes, and the ways they are embodied in the life of the school community.

NCPAPA provided our cohort with a series of leadership trainings-Distinguished Leadership in Practice (DLP). This is an assignment where I assessed and reflected on the vision/mission statement of our school. I learned about the importance of threading the vision and mission of the school through everything we do.

After our 2nd Benchmark results came in, the leadership team met to discuss the progress of our 6th grade math students. We decided to make some adjustments and came up with a plan to help students who were projected to decrease in proficiency between 5th Grade EOG scores and current 6th grade benchmarks. Note: Student names have been removed.

Part of the school district's strategic plan was to emphasize vocabulary comprehension. This is a presentation I created to implement a new research based instructional strategy. I was responsible for researching and implementing the strategy as well as following up to ensure effectiveness and fidelity.

One of my leadership tasks was to work with the school improvement team to develop the school improvement plan. I was responsible for updating the plan regularly and uploading the plan into the Indistar System. I learned valuable skills with respect to communication, delegation and implementation. I gained experience as the NC STAR process manager for my school.

Element 1d. Distributive Leadership:
The principal creates and utilizes processes to distribute leadership and decision making throughout the school.

The NC STAR system requires schools to assign and manage 12 indicators. As the process manager for my school, I used distributive leadership to assign different action items to various school improvement team members. Each team member was empowered to collect artifacts and implement their action item. This taught me about clearly defining roles and responsibilities for staff members.
