Standard 5: Managerial Leadership
Principals will ensure that the school has processes and systems in place for budgeting, staffing, problem-solving, communicating expectations and scheduling that result in organizing the work routines in the building. The principal must be responsible for the monitoring of the school budget and the inclusion of all teachers in the budget decision so as to meet the 21st century needs of every classroom. Effectively and efficiently managing the complexity of every day life is critical for staff to be able to focus its energy on improvement.

This budget presentation represents my capacity to work with a team of educators to come to a joint solution. We used the TregoEd decision making process to take the emotion out of our budget decision. Additionally, we broke down the budget and our data to make a decision to spend money on 1) Improving math proficiency by investing in our teachers and HillMATH 2) Initiating a Power Club/Remediation schedule.

I worked with the administrative team to determine where and how to spend our focused intervention money. After looking at data, we decided to spend money on hiring a math tutor. Additionally, we decided to expand our learning commons by purchasing whiteboard tables for students to work on (high engagement). I learned how to research and communicate budget ideas with our administrative team.

During my residency, I handled a variety of student and parent situations. This is an email I sent to grade level teachers to set up a meeting with a parent. I learned that it is important to start parent-teacher conferences by sharing positive information about the student. Whenever a student came to my office for a behavioral issue, we would also discuss grades and goals.

This is an email I sent teachers to remind them of the PBIS tracking tool that they had available. I wanted to communicate my support for their efforts while ensuring everyone had a clear understanding of the discipline procedures. This helped to improve our ability to document and follow-up on student incidents.

As the NC STAR process manager, I created this quick "cheat sheet" to help update SIT members on our artifact collection progress. This streamlined the process for staff members who would have otherwise had to wade through the 12+ page school improvement plan to find their indicator and action item. This helped improve the artifact collection portion of the NC STAR process.

Element 5d. School Expectations for Students and Staff:
The principal develops and enforces expectations, structures, rules and procedures for students and staff.

The staff handbook helps to establish and clarify processes, procedures and expectations for the school year. I learned how important it was to have reference materials (ie; who to contact) to help staff members find who they needed to speak with.

This is the presentation we used at our opening staff meeting to help set the tone for the school year. We reviewed important pieces of the handbook while also taking time to discuss our academic trajectory. This experience taught me how important it is to be organized about your opening meeting. There is a lot of information that needs to be covered but we also want to develop staff "buy in".

At the beginning of the school year, administration met with each grade level individually. We used this presentation to deliver pertinent information to students. It was important to lay out policies and procedures that students needed to follow to be successful at West Edgecombe. When handling discipline issues, I referenced this presentation to remind students that we had already discussed the policies that govern the school.
